The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario’s NextGen is excited to offer its 12th annual Job Shadow Program, taking place during Heritage Week, February 19- 23, 2024. This program provides students with an opportunity to network and make key professional connections in their area of choice, learn about future job opportunities and gain experience for their resumes, as well as meet with other young people interested in heritage and get published.

Each year, our partner organizations, including architecture and engineering firms, government bodies and diverse non-profits, generously agree to meet with students or emerging professionals to discuss their experience, what they do, their career progressions, opportunities in the field and their industries as a whole.

Hosts continue to host students in person or online. Any in-person meetings will be arranged at the discretion of the hosting organization.

Activities could include:
• Site visits to past or current projects
• Neighbourhood architecture tours
• Tours of offices, labs, and workshops
• Discussions of the host’s own career progression
• Sitting-in on meetings/consultations and reviewing planning documents
• Professional reviews of a participant’s portfolio
• Overviews of legislation, guidelines, policies, permitting, etc.
• Assisting with special events
• Assisting on communications/marketing/blogs

Information for Students / Emerging Professionals

Participant registration is extended until February 2nd, 2024 at 11:59pm EST.

The program is open to students and young professionals exploring careers in architecture, heritage conservation, planning, landscape architecture, museums, history, archaeology and related fields. Applicants must be ACO Members. To become a member, please visit the ACO website.

Each year, we have significant interest in several of our hosts, with popular hosts including ERA, GBCA, the Ontario Heritage Trust, and the City of Toronto among others. With a limited number of spots available for each of these placements, we encourage you to consider other organizations as well to increase your chances of getting one of your top three.

If we are unable to match you with one of your top three but feel you are a good fit for another organization, we will contact with with an alternative match that fits your skills and interests. Contacting hosts will not increase your chances of being paired with any particular organization. If applicant numbers exceed positions, we do not guarantee placement. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the ACO NextGen team. Host descriptions and participation may be subject to changes.

By providing you with an opportunity to meet with leaders in their fields, this program will help you build key connections, gain valuable knowledge about your field of choice, and add experience to your resume.

This is also an opportunity to get published. Job shadow participants will have the option of publishing a post about their experience for the NextGen blog, with the possibility of having it shared to NextGen’s newsletter list on ACO’s social media.
